An Adventure in the Lakes for a hot July!

July 8, 2025

July is here, and it’s going to be a hot one!

What’s your go-to remedy for a heat wave? Do you sit in front of your fan all day? Stick to air conditioned interiors? Or do you book a holiday to get away from it all? Given the option, we’d much rather ride out the heat on the beautiful Solway Coast, with the sea breeze rustling our hair…

It’s sweltering. Where better to escape the heat than a cool church in the Lake District? St Luke’s, Clifton, inhabits one of the most beautiful – and heavily touristed! – parts of the UK. The Lake District attracts visitors from all over the world during the summer months, and accommodation can get quite pricey. Luckily, we’ve got a solution! St Luke’s is a unique and atmospheric Victorian church in West Cumbria, perched on a hillside at Chapel Brow, overlooking the villages of Bridgefoot and Little Clifton at the edge of the Lake District. We provide all the necessities: camp beds and chairs, fairy lights, a kettle and a toaster – oh, and thick stone walls to keep the heat out. Dogs are more than welcome as well, and your furry friends in their thick coats will thank you!

But a cool night’s sleep isn’t everything that St Luke’s has to offer; far from it! We’ve compiled a list of some of the most beautiful sights accessible from our church, so read on to find out more about this stunning Champing location.

  • Workington – An ancient market town and industrial hub, Workington gave shelter Mary Queen of Scots before her imprisonment and execution.
  • Cockermouth – A beautiful Georgian town, close to Crummock Water and the Lakeland mountains, and the birthplace of William Wordsworth.
  • The Solway Coast – One of the UK’s most beautiful and distinctive natural landscapes. Beaches and ice cream, anyone?
  • Carlisle – Don’t miss the castle and the cathedral!
  • Hadrian’s Wall – The ancient system of fortifications built to protect Roman Britain from northern invaders.
  • King Arthur’s Round Table – This neolithic henge was once thought to be a location for jousting connected with the legendary King Arthur
  • Penrith – The historic market town just 15 minutes’ drive from the Vale of Eden
  • Bonscale Pike – The perfect less-travelled walking route with unparalleled views.
  • Ullswater – The views across this glacial lake are both stunning and serene. Perfect for paddleboarding.
  • Near Sawrey – A picturesque village home to Hill Top farmhouse, home of Beatrix Potter.

You can book St Luke’s here, or check out our other churches on our website. Happy July, and happy Champing!
