Rambling and roaming
With so much to visit in the area, you’ll wish you booked a longer stay. There are cycling routes including the Richmond 5 Dales Tour De France route, walking in the dales to your hearts content and lovely local pubs waiting to welcome you. One of them is so famous, it was the inspiration for a Waitrose Christmas advert one year. Barnard Castle (eye test anyone?) and Richmond are both popular lovely market towns packed with history, independent shops and each have a castle to visit.
While the Dales are beautiful, they don’t have shops (or petrol stations) on every corner, so bring breakfast provisions with you and feel free to use the kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge at your disposal. If something with less washing up appeals to you, pop down to Reeth and head for the Two Dales Bakery or the Dales Bike Centre for your breakfast instead.
Don’t forget that the National Park is an International Dark Sky reserve- a perfect end to the day, get outside on a clear night and take in the marvellous show above your head.
For eating out options, there’s the highly recommended Charles Bathurst Inn (CB Inn to locals) which is great for lunchtime and evening dining, but booking is advisable, as they are very popular with locals and visitors alike. No visit to the area is complete without a trip to Tan Hill- England’s highest pub at 528 mts above sea level- that’s 1,732 ft in old money.
There are lots of lovely restaurants in Richmond, highly recommend is Elixir on the market square with its big portions and great value.
