Rambling and roaming

Our second location in the Lake District, Witherslack is perfectly located to explore the area from. There’s a train station 7 miles away at Grange-Over-Sands, and its only a 30 minute drive from Windermere.

Witherslack is a small quiet village but there’s plenty to do locally- pop along to the Derby Arms for a pint and a bite to eat, or book yourself an evening Spa session at The Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge. If you don’t fancy venturing out for breakfast, bring breakfast provisions with you and feel free to use the kettle and toaster before you set off for the day. Have a wander round the Halecat Nurseries looking at the beautiful plants or visit one of the stately homes and gardens in the area- there’s a few to choose from!

For the foodies amongst you, now’s your chance to eat at a choice of Michelin starred restaurants-check out The Old Stamp House in Ambleside, which was once the office of William Wordsworth or L’Enclume in Cartmel. We’re sure we don’t need to tell you that advance bookings are essential for these gastronomic experiences!

Cartmel also has an 800 year old Priory to wander round for peace and tranquility and a popular race course for those looking for something with a bit more of an adrenaline surge.

It's a lovely Church

It’s a lovely Church with 400yrs of history. The Facilities (Kitchenette and outside flushing toilet) were great. The camp beds where comfortable complete with fluffy blankets and hot water bottles in knitted sleeves. The Best thing is the views across the valley are beautiful.

First champ and definitely not the last.

First champ and definitely not the last. A beautiful old church steeped in history with links to St Paul’s in London from where it takes its name, and the civil war. Great kitchen facilities: microwave, kettle, hot water urn, fridge, crockery, cutlery and plenty of tea/coffee etc. The hot water bottle and fluffy throw were especially appreciated in the chill of the night and there was something special about the hooting of an owl as I nipped through the church yard to the toilet in the night. Wonderful location in South Lakes with stunning views.

A great host and a thorough introduction!

Ben was a great host and thorough in his introduction as well as knowledgeable about the local area. The church was lovely and had a great little kitchen. The local area is full of places to visit (we personally recommend Blackwell, an arts and crafts house) and Levens Hall, which has a beautiful garden full of topiary. I took part in a Guide Over Sands walk (6 miles, easy) from Arnside to Grange Over Sands and that was a good experience. There’s good places to eat nearby as well. It is rural so it helps if you have a car, but you could stay here and use public transport if you don’t mind a walk.

Lovely church situated in beautiful scenery of Cumbria

Lovely church situated in beautiful scenery of Cumbria. Great facilities and a warm welcome from the champing team. Beautiful walks recommended in the church information /history booklet. Loved our stay so quiet and refreshing. The star gazing was amazing our family loved our time spent together here.

A surprise stop on a roadtrip

A stop on an epic journey!

We stopped here as part of an epic journey from Devon back home to Scotland, and were really impressed with the whole experience. Alison from the church was in touch week before we arrived, and was as friendly and helpful as it was possible to be. When we finally arrived, very late (because….M6) she with a gentleman (who’s name I’ve forgotten – I’m rubbish, sorry) met us at the church, & gave us a great introduction to everything. The church itself is great – architecturally really interesting, and in a beautiful location. The wee kitcheny thing has everything you need, including a fridge, and the outside privy is close at hand. Would I do this again? absolutely. Would I stay here again? of course! many thanks

The night sky was clear and we could see the Milky Way

We stayed at St Paul’s Church at Witherslack for one night, and it was amazing. We were given a very warm welcome despite the chilly spring temperatures, and everything was lovingly arranged. The volunteers provided us with extra fluffy blankets, hot water bottles, fairy lights and biscuits – all were very welcome. The church is beautiful and it is wonderful to sleep in such a lovely and peaceful building. The night sky was clear and we could see the Milky Way. It’s advisable to bring extra blankets, thick jumpers and an insulation mat to put on the camp beds to keep warm – the church is extremely cold if temperatures hover around freezing. Witherslack can be reached via public transport (local bus from Kendal/Grange-over-Sands) – very convenient for us. Thank you to the Champing Team and local Volunteers for a lovely stay.

A charming church in a peaceful setting

A charming church in a peaceful setting. Under the shadow of a limestone wooded cliff (Yewbarrow), the church more or less has the valley to itself; so the night sky is magnificent. A 17th century rustic exterior; interior georgian and victorian. The hosts were extremely welcoming: fairy lights and easter eggs greeted us! A fine pub, with excellent meals, in the village a mile and a half to the south (The Derby Arms). Our first experience champing. It will not be our last!

Friendly welcome and a lovely little church full of history

Friendly welcome and a lovely little church full of history. Great facilities Beautiful view across the countryside. This church is really rural, so don’t forget to bring your food! Good kitchen facilities on site, and the hot water bottles were a welcome addition. The loo is outside the church gates, so torches and a quick dash is necessary (no street lights). There are woodland walks all around, so the dog got to stretch his legs, and found a deer in the morning 🙂 Thanks for helping us out when we forgot to pack everything when we left…oops!
