My husband, Tom, and I stayed overnight at St James Church in Cooling as part of our anniversary weekend. We’ve never champed before so didn’t quite know what to expect, but we were not disappointed. We had forgotten to bring an extra torch as recommended but there were plenty of portable lanterns and electric candles already provided. The fairy lights added a nice touch of coziness, along with the lawn chairs which provided more comfortable seating than the wooden pews! We were really glad that we brought extra fleece blankets in addition to our sleeping bags as the church got pretty chilly overnight (it was towards the end of Sept). Also glad that it didn’t rain, otherwise the late night trips to the toilet outside would have been rather soggy! St James is a lovely church with interesting historical information, and the pub down the road served up a nice cooked breakfast, which we had booked as part of our Champing stay.
