Myself and 4 friends heard of champing recently, and decided we’d give it a go, and so booked in for 1 night at St Mary’s in Stansted. When we arrived, it was in such a beautiful spot surrounded by countryside and fields with little nature walks, and such a beautiful churchyard, we took a while to have a look around the grounds, which looked even more beautiful in the sunset. We then entered the church, and were really impressed with the beautiful touches made for our stay. There were twinkly lights everywhere, with battery operated candles. There was a bedding area, and a cute seating area set up for all 5 of us. The place looked so magical & inviting once lit up, and we appreciated the pack of cards/bottle opener/tea, coffee & hot chocolate left for our stay. There were even hot water bottles for us each on our beds. There was also a water dispenser, so you could drink as much as you want. The toilet is a non flush porterloo, so essentially a little flap opens when you ‘go’ and then everything gathers below. There is also no sink with instead anti bac gel facilities, so it took a little getting used to, but was absolutely fine for a short stay. The toilet is also in a separate room to the main church, which gives more privacy. I would take the advice on the website and wrap up warm, and bring warm bedding! I was wearing a jumper and had a sleeping bag, and still felt quite chilly! But was beautiful to wake up in such a silent spot, with the light streaming through the stained glass windows. I also met the volunteer who set the church up for us in the morning, as she happened to be doing a spot of gardening in the grounds (Linda) and she was lovely, and we spoke about the grounds and its history. Myself and my friends said it was a fantastic experience, and we shall definitely be booking in again soon. Thankyou Linda for the little touches which made it feel like home!
